This publication is based on the published piano score (DSCH, Moscow, 1996) collated with the author’s manuscript of the piano score kept at RSALA (rec. gr. 2048, inv. 2, f. 41) and the author’s manuscript of the score kept in RSALA (rec. gr. 2048, f. 29, 30, 31, 40). The piano score has been brought into compliance with the published score (D. Shostakovich, New Collected Works, Vols. 62a, 62b, 62c, DSCH, Moscow, 2013).
The piano score of the unfinished opera Orango (DSCH, Moscow, 2010), in which some of the music from the ballet The Bolt (Nos. 42 and 43) was used, was also referred to for collation.
Most of the repeated fragments are designated with recapitulation signs in piano score. All the repeats are inserted in score (whereby some of the author’s score figures have been changed—in Nos. 7, 9, 11, 13, 21, 24, 25, 28, 29, 37, 40, 42, and 43). As a result of this, double rehearsal numbers and double bar pagination appear in these items.
