The book is dedicated to friendship and creative relationship between Dmitri Shostakovich and Vissarion Shebalin, which lasted almost 40 years. It is based on various documents: letters, memoirs, texts of performances and statements of both composers in print, which record not only the main milestones of their work, but also reflect the commonality of their aesthetic views, judgments about the ways of development of Soviet music and national culture, about the problems of musical education. These materials were collected and prepared for publication by Alisa Maksimovna Shebalina (Vissarion Shebalin's widow) in the form of a handwritten book, which is being published for the first time.
The book is addressed to a wide range of readers interested in the history of Russian musical culture of the Soviet period.
