Music to the Film Zoya

This publication is based on the author’s manuscripts kept in the Russian National Museum of Music (RNMM), rec. gr. 32, No. 105 (Nos. 1-5, 7-17, 20-25, 30 and 31) and No. 295 (No. 35), and the edition of the score of “Music to the Film Zoya” in D. Shostakovich, Collected Works, in 42 vols., Vol. 41, Muzyka Publishers, Moscow, 1987. The manuscripts of the score have been collated with the film soundtrack.
There are two versions of the film Zoya—one done in 1944 and the other in 1967. The present edition follows the first, main version, without the cut scenes and abridgements done in the second version.
The manuscripts and edition of the score do not always correspond to the actual music heard in the film. Some items have cuts and inserts, some items are not used in full in the film, some items (or their fragments) are repeated in different places in the film, and there is also music that does not feature in the manuscript or in the edition.
  Items 18, 19, 26, 27, 28, 29, 32, 33 and 34 are not included in the author’s list of items for the film Zoya.
The sequence of items and their numbering in this edition follow the manuscript.
  The sequence of the musical items in the film is different: 31, 1, 8, 3, 9, 20, 2, 22, 12, 35, 21, 14, 23, 16, 30, 15, 17, 25, 24, 6, 5, 7, 10.
